HMI Design @ tonights ISA meeting

Hi,
Tonight Paul Gruhn put on an informative presentation on HMI design. Paul is an expert that actually knows what he is talking about. He also presents the material like the best professor you had in college. I strongly encourage you to go t the ISA Houston Section web site and look for his presentation. It is not up tonight, but will be soon in .pdf with a copy of his white paper on this. I plan on buying at least one of the books he referenced.

Happy Monday!

Welcome back from Thanksgiving to your world of work. Some projects seem to be starting to move.
We have two more months in the fiscal year and I seem to be spot on the dollar to goal.

We at HD Supply Electrical are a full line tool distributor. Besides the Klein & FLUKE, we have Snap-on as an industrial distributor. You can buy anything you see on line at Snap-on from us. Just call me.

HAPPY 51ST HOUSTON AUTORAMA!

Hi,
One holiday tradition here in Houston is the Autorama Hot rod show. I ran into clients and vendors at the show this year. No real surprise since this event has been popular for years.

This year was great. there was a Rider Cup winner from out of town. Also there were many locally based cars shown for the first time. The craftsmanship on display this year was phenomenal. Great paintwork and photography were on display. Darren Wenzell was showing a painting I'm temped o go back and buy. Jason Barnett was showing art and furniture. One table was made from an early Chrysler HEMI. He also had a scale P-40 Warhawk nose with shark teeth paint job that was great looking.
I only had the blackberry curve for a camera, sorry.
That can not begin to capture the quality of the work this year. I did grab a couple of snap shots to show you.
One is a pair of real Shelby GT-350s, one was a drag car all it's life and the other an SCCA road racer all it's life. Both are very original.
The next is a different take on a flame paint job. The parts of the hood not flames are cut out!

The next is a different take on a flame paint job. The parts of the hood not flames are cut out!
Now it is off the the UH College of Technology watch party @ SRO NW Mall.
We will see out Houston Cougars take on Texas Tech in Lubbock @7p.m.
Go Coogs!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Hi,
Despite all the problems we all faced this year with the economy, good things did come my way.
That is true both personally and professionally.
Today is a good day to thank all those that have been a part of that as clients or vendors.
Thanks friends.
Today is also the time to read what the pilgrims and George Washington said about this.
Yes I gave you homework! But I think you know the answer anyway.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Saving the BIG EAST with BIG moves

Dear Commissioner Marinatto:
Perhaps you should take the remarkable idea Larry Scott had with the PAC-16 and flip it.

This will be a mirror of the proposed PAC-16.
The BIG EAST keeps getting threats on its football AQ status.

The eight BE football schools are
W Va
PITT
USF
Rutgers
Syracuse
U Conn
Cincinnati
Louisville
This will form the BE Atlantic Div
The BE Central Div for football will be as follows.
TCU
Houston
Rice
SMU
 UCF
Memphis
Tulane
UTEP

Now that we have shaken up the BCS football world why would it work?
Money & recruiting.
Now the Big 16 can have a conference championship game.
For the first two years we play in in NYC. We use the new stadium. Then we go on a rotation.
Jerry Jones house, the new Cowboys stadium just lost the Big 12 championship. We fill that void and he promotes the Big 16.
Then Reliant stadium.
The we go to Florida and play in Bucs stadium.
No school can have home field, just home town.
This makes money especially since we start in NYC.
The next three stops in the rotation are in the hottest football recruiting grounds in the USA.
This gives schools in both divisions easy travel except USF. That is their problem.
Each school get one school from the other div each year.
This leaves each school 3 non conf games.
We all try for one Big Six opponent. I say we avoid the Big 12 for several reasons.
First, we want to threaten them and recruit against them.
We can do that better playing the SEC, Big 10, PAC-10 & ACC.
We pick two easy non conference games since we are now in an AQ.
I would suggest we try for LSU vs Houston and Vandy vs Rice.
This is very much an urban conference. Coach Yoeman always found kids from the country that wanted to play in the big city.
Now for basketball.
We shamefully have stunk for a while, but we have to play our heritage and that we are coming back.
Also Houston has lots of  basketball talent.
We now need to rock the basketball world.
We would now have 24 teams which could be divided in tow or three divisions. We petition for two AQs in basketball like the PAC-16 was said to propose in football.
Forget about the Great Alaska Shoot Out.
We offer the Guy V Lewis challenge!
The twenty four schools of the new conference join for the the preseason event that will overshadow the preseason NIT.
Forty eight schools meet in "The Garden".
Our new conference against an equal number of opponents.
We start the challenge there in NYC while Hoffinze. is being rebuilt and then rotate. If it takes a few years, it takes a few years.
This is a huge money maker for the conference and it helps promotes UH. It shows the injustice of  Guy not being in the hall of fame without us whining.
For the first year we celebrate the life of John Wooden as well.
He and Guy brought college basketball to TV.
This is a great angle.
Yes this entire play would be stronger if we could lure in Kansas and K-State in lieu of UTEP an Tulane. The road trips would just be more boring.
Back to recruiting, that is one of the three main payoffs for the BIG EAST.
This league is the opposite of the PAC-10 in that it has many, private schools with religious affiliations.
This will help those schools recruit against ND in TX and FLA.
It will help them all recruit in in TX & FLA, but for the other Roman Catholic schools this is an extra bonus. of course being in an AQ conference helps us recruit and we have something different to offer than UT or A&M.
The benefits to the existing BIG EAST are as follows.
Survival as an AQ conference.
They are now bullet proof to any raids by the Big-10
Money
From the football championship game, the expanded membership and the Guy V Lewis Challenge.
Better recruiting in TX & FLA.
To top it all off the many of existing schools will feel that they have the upper hand.
Villanova can wait on moving up or can come now.

best regards,
Alan Powell

The First "The Pulse" broadcast of the football season

Sept 8th was the first broadcast for this season of The Pulse with UH head football coach Kevin Sumlin. It was a fun show from the Rajun Cajun on Richmond Ave. in Houston. I twas a full house including some past Cougar football stars. After the show we went to SRO NW Mall to finalize our watch party plans for the UH vs UCLA game on Sept 18th.

ISA Meeting Sept 8th

Today's ISA Pipeline subsection meeting was quite informative. Gary Potten from Cameron Jiskoot was scheduled to present the topic. He had a last minute conflict, so Alan Stearns filled in for him. It was a great presentation on sampling system applications. Even a novice on the subject like me could follow along. I now understand how to apply my enclosures on these  projects better.

It was a great weekend here in Houston!
Several of us went to the new St. Arnold Brewery for the tour this Saturday.
They have new equipment with a new control system. We will see about a tour just for that.
We were just there drinking in the culture with everyone else on the regular tour this time.
It is a good event hall to book.
After the tour it was off to see the Cougars win their home opener in electrifying fashion.

This will be a busy & short week.
We have projects bidding, and an ISA meeting at H.E.S.S.
Make the ISA meeting if you can, details on my website www.electricalan.com
Well one more cookout to visit tonight.

AUGUST 11TH OPEN HOUSE

On August the 11th the good folks at eControls invited HD Supply & Siemens by after work.

Happy Independence Day!

Hi All,

I hope your 4th was a good one.Now that the nonstop Spring has sprung we can get on with life and Summer. We have actually increased inventory on open control products and NEMA 7 pilot devices in support of one of my clients. Everywhere else around town we seem to see inventory reductions. One of our vendor is consolidating warehouses so I am pushing for a general inventory increase in that line. If you are having delivery problems with your current supplier call me.
We have a break from trade shows and outings for a while. But don't worry I'm planning more events for the fall.
Perhaps even sooner .

My how time flies.
New Years, inventory, Rodeo Houston, a bunch of ISA events, UH Technology Golf Tournament, OTC, ABB Power & Automation World and it's nearly Memorial Day.
This year ABB once again put on a stellar event.
The seminars were great and the customer appreciation night was the best ever.
I'm very glad that ABB comes back to Houston with this event so often.
Why weren't you there with me? It was great!
Join me at ABB Power & Automation world 2011 in Orlando.

OTC Wednesday Continued

Hi,
My return to OTC 2010 was quite useful. We now can provide EXP/flame proof solar panels and battery systems for small equipment. Pretty cool stuff.
The evening was capped off at the Joslyn Clark reception in the Reliant Stadium Press Box.
It was a first class event by JC and NSOEM. I met the new engineering manger at Joslyn Clark, who has been charged with EXPANDING their engineering department in the USA.
Several old friends were there and we were able to geek on some VFD grounding problems.
The iPOD touch door prizes were a hit as well.

Great Friday & Saturday

Hi,
The Univeristy of Houston Technology Alumni Assoc. Golf Tournament was a great sucess at WoodForest CC this year. This helps us provide scholorships for kids in Logistics/Industrial Distribution. Thanks go out to all our players and sponsors. It was a great networking event as well.
Saturday was the UH Red and White game. We had tailgated before and after the game.
As usual the Technology Alumni pavillion was the place to be. We networked with other professionals in the electrical trade along with the President of UH and Dean of our college.

Now a MONDAY

Hi,
Today Putterman brought Rig-A-Lite by. They not only have a new LED version of the SAF, they have a lot more fixtures for the food service industry. They have launched a new catalog and gave us the first copies of their new lit.

Later I was able to answer some code issues for one of my clients with a project in Austriala.
I'll post some links to the Aussie code book later on www.electricalan.com

Be happy, it's almost TAX DAY!

Another Manic Friday

Hi,
Today was another double header. In between sales calls and quotes there were a couple of visits to note.
First; the SIDO UH golf tournament in Pearland. SIDO is the student organization for Logistics at UH. I was in it back in the day. These kids are doing a great job, and even listen to my stories.
The event was a sucess. Later after turning out some quotes at the office it was off the the 1st annual Source IEC crawfish fest. Source IEC has been in their new facility about a year now.
It is a nice layout with lots of room for growth. They have plenty of Ogland SS cable tray in stock for you to buy from me! I'll post photos as soon as Bob remembers to email them to me.

Two events today!

Hi Y'all,

Today we worked the ISA show in Pasadena TX.
Nice show, we meet some new people and found some new applications to solve.
I worked the ABB/Entrelec/control/drives booth with David from ABB and Lisa from Enhanced.

On the way back from Pasadena I visited Emely's B-Day bash at the Live Oak. It's still rocking as I write this.

March 25th Texas City ISA show

Hi,

Today I and Ted Byert of EES joined David Wagner of ABB at the Texas City show. We were able to help some people today with their application problems. Be they drive error messages, replacing S&S with ABB lighting contactors or just making a better terminal connection.
We got to catch up with old friends from TASC & DMSI for a good day. But, my Blackberry is a poor camera. Next show I'll bring my SONY.
cheers

New application notes

Hi,

Today I was working to solve a VFD overheating problem.

Two things came up you should know.

We can order any Mclean A/C through Hoffman, not just the ones in the Hoffman #22 book.

They are both owned by the same company.

Also the new Spectracool line has launched and a catalog update is online.

While looking at A/C units, I saw that the Fusion G7 enclosures were now online.

Several of you have been waiting for it. You will have samples soon.

Links are on http://www.electricalan.com/ go to the Hoffman link and pick new products for G7 or thermal management for A/C

March 10th ISA shrimpboil wrap up

Hi,
We had a great turnout at the ISA shrimp boil.
While the Farm & Ranch Club was not as full as before, the turnout was still good.
We featured ABB drives and Okonite cables.
Ted Byert & Jim Alfano of EES helped us put on the show.
We would like to David Wagner of ABB and Penny Smith of Okonite for their support.
It was good seeing everyone out there and we are working on the projects we discussed.
Follow this link for a photo of Jim at our second booth featuring ABB VFDs.
Once I get the video software working, we will have a short video.

Rodeo wrap up.

Howdy y'all!

While Rode Houston continues, I am done for this year.
Our West Club Suite provides a great Rodeo viewing experience and the sunset out our front door over the Texans practice bubble is tremendous.
I was there on four shows.
Great times.
