Hey Man,
Things have be really busy of late and the posting has suffered.
Tonight is Christmas eve and I am back from visiting friends and family.
Houston sports fans got the gifts of their Houston Cougars getting a close quality bowl game and a new new coach for the Coogs.
Watch the Houston Cougars January 2nd in the Ticket City Bowl, played at the historic Cotton Bowl.
Go Coogs, beat PSU.
In NASCAR Kurt Busch got the gift of a new team in what sounds like the plot to movie.
A former champ has the chance for redemption leading an underdog team.
It is time for me to put up some lights.
Merry Christmas to all and a good night!

Hey Man,
What a disappointing Saturday. Our 12-0 Houston Cougars fell to 12-1! Southern Miss is a a great team and well coached. Every year we drop road games to teams we are favored to beat, but this was at home for the C-USA championship on national TV! Coach, we expect you to have the team prepared for this.
Enough venting. We have lots to be happy about. Case Keenum has had a amazing come back season and owns just about all the records worth having, the team is 12-1 with a winnable bowl game ahead. We still got a bowl invitation and it is close. Your Houston Cougars will face Penn State in the Ticket City Bowl in historic Cotton Bowl stadium. The Houston Cougars will soon be in an AQ conference. We have one more season to win in C-USA. The Houston Cougars are still ranked ahead of most schools in most AQ conferences.
Basketball has started and your Cougars have improved to 4-3. The Three losses were by a combined 4 points.
The team is improving and the program is going in the right direction.
In pro motor sports, we have entered the testing season for F1, NASCAR and most Northern Hemisphere series. The return f Kimi to F1 is the big off season news so far. But right next to it ponder this. Ferrari and Red Bull pulled out of the FOTA. McLaren & Williams not involved. None of the teams called Lotus were mentioned either. Only Red Bull and Ferrari took action. But it tells you who the top dogs are now.
No new news on the Austin F1 disaster. Perhaps it can be saved.
NASCAR is all about the awards banquet and kinda dull for now.
That is it for now. I hope to see lots of you at the Ticket city Bowl to cheer on your Cougars.
I will be at the UH football awards banquet to cheer on the team this week.
Next year, hint, hint, your will see the electricAlan back on track.
No, I can't tell you what series yet, things are not settled.
cheers

Hey Man,
The F1 season ended today in Brazil. Webber finally got a win, Vettel still got second with a sick car and Button managed third. Bernie said all the Austin Texas GP lacked was money and a pen. F1 in the USA for 2012 looks bad.
Now for your Houston Cougar baskeball. TCU beat us at the buzzer in the Hof. The team is getting better and I think we will be a lot better before we start conference play.
How about that football win in Tulsa! That was a blast. We had a watch party in here in Houston. Our friends that went reported that the Tulsa fans were gracious and wished us well in the BCS.
But to get to that BCS Bowl we have to beat Southern Miss. Since the foundation of C-USA Southern Miss has been the most successful team. The C-USA Championship games is this next Saturday @ 11a.m. in the Rob. We will be there tailgating early. All the projections are still favoring Michigan winning out to improve their ranking so they can go to the Sugar Bowl. If they don't Houston will probably face K-State in the sugar Bowl. Of all the possible bowls Houston might get a trip back to New Orleans sounds best.
Your Houston Cougar defense has really improved as the season progressed. Look at how Houston beat Tulsa compared to OU,OSU, or Boise.
See you at the game!

College Sports Wrap Up Nov 20th
Hey Man,
What a week to be a Houston Cougar!
The basketball team is undefeated in it's first three games. Friday night the Coogs beat Arkansas up there!
Houston Cougar basketball is back in a big way. Alandise Harris is all over video with his dunk.
Houston Cougar football is back in a big this season. 11-0 ties us for the best record with LSU.
The Houston Cougars are now 8th in the BCS standings. We need a playoff in college football and even Houston hater Craig James used Houston as an example tonight if we had a top 8 playoff.
This Friday afternoon your Houston Cougars face Tulsa up there to finish the regular season.
A win puts Houston in the conference championship game at home in the Rob. A win there gives Houston the conference championship and a BCS bowl berth.
The fun factor around town is great all season. This week College Game Day broadcast from UH for the first time. The Corso "aw ****" video is burning up the internet.

Motor Sports Wrap Up For Nov 20th
Hey Man,
NASCAR just finished and it was great. The points were the closest in NASCAR history. Smoke thanked the Man upstairs and his crew. Tony Stewart got up on the wheel and drove it old school. Tony talked about how he asked his hero AJ Foyt for permission to use his number 14 on the car. Tony Stewart as partner in Stewart-Haas became the first owner/driver to win the championship since Alan Kulwicki won in 1992. Richard Petty is the only other man to win the championship as an owner/driver in the modern era.
Carl Edwards showed resolve and in the end showed championship class. Stewart got track position with a risky pit strategy and Carl could not run him down. Carl Edwards was the first to congratulate Tony on his win. You would not see that from Havrick.
The F1 season has one race left next week. But now most of the actionis the politics of F1. F1 got it's deal in NYC so they are snubbing Texas. That will carry over in the statewide elections in 2012 if the F1 race and track don't happen.
It's Thanksgiving week in Houston and that means AUTORAMA.

Houston Cougar Sports Wrap Up for Nov 13th 2012
Hey Man,
What a great weekend to be a Houston Cougar. We drove up Thursday morning and had a great time. We stayed in a small hotel near the Quarter and found many of the guest to parents, in-laws or spouses of team members. Cougar fans appeared to out number Tulane fans buy a large margin in the Super Dome. We got half price tickets from an older man and they were real. We met a surprising number of UH alumni who live in the Big Easy, both at the game and out in the Quarter. The Cougars won 73 to 17 and our coach played everyone but me.
So on 11-11-2011 we were 11th in the BCS and after the win we still are. BUT now ESPN & CBS project us to play Alabama in the Sugar Bowl! That is a big change from the Beef O'Brady Bowl a few days ago.
It is a good thing we went for the weekend. We have found new to us places like the Erin Rose & Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop Pub. Everybody was friendly and the food was great. After the game bar owners, whiskey reps and future Big East opponents bought us drinks for being Houston Cougars.
All we need now is for our Cougars to win out and have our first perfect season.
While we were driving back, The Houston Cougar basket ball team won their opener against Grambling State.
What is next?
Monday night Utah Vally comes to play the Cougars.
Tuesday night The Pulse radio show with Kevin Sumlin will have it's last scheduled broadcast of the season from the Ragin Cajun on Richmond.
Then ESPN Game Day before the Technology Alumni Tailgate and the game against SMU.
At the SMU game the Cougars will have a shot at breaking the record for the most consecutive 700+ yard games. The current record belongs to Hawaii under Coach June Jones.

Motor Sports Wrap up for Nov 13th
Hey Man,
The F1 race was too early this morning. But I caught the start live. After Vettel cut a right rear tire and spun off track on the first lap things got racy. The race ended with Hamilton, Alonso and Button on the podium.
Williams admits to talks with Raikkonen and is urged by some to sign him.
The NASCAR CHASE continues. Kyle Petty said today this was kind of a throwback battle. That is because Edwards and Stewart are racing each other with respect like his father The King and David Pearson did.
Next week in Florida for the championship between Edwards and Stewart should be a great race.
Kahne won today in a hard fought win. The Red Bull team is up for sale and their crew isn't quitting, they are working hard. That deserves respect. Let's hope the people at NASCAR Team Red Bull find a new owner to save their jobs.
The NHRA finals are still going on.
cheers

Hey Man,
Happy Veterans Day and thank you to all our Vets.
I just got back in town so please forgive me being a couple of days late.
I spent Veterans Day in New Orleans, home of the The National WWII Museum.
It was a wonderful day long experience. My late father was in the Navy in WWII. His cousin was a civilian POW on the Bataan Death March. It was a moving experience. I recommend visiting if you can.

Nov 7th Sports Wrap Up
Hey Man!
It was another great weekend for your Houston Cougars. The team is now a school best 9-0. Case Keenum passed Timmy Chang for total yardage and now may have the record for the most records by a QB.
I watched the game @ No Label Brewing in Katy. What a great time. The UH Technology and communication Alumni had their watch parties there. The BBQ fund raiser was by Crosspoint Church and it was terrific.
Thank you No Label.
After the Coogs game and during half time I saw some of the so called game of the century, ZZZZZZZZZZ. Early poll show most do not want a rematch.
In NASCAR we saw Tony Stewart dominate most of the race from Texas. He is now only three points behind Carl Edwards. The race from Texas was much more interesting than what I saw of the game of the century.
Oh well time to hit the road.

A Quick Motor Sports Round Up For Oct 30th
Hey Man,
I got up early for the 1st GP of India. The track looked attractive.
Vettel ran a way and won. Button was second and Alonso was happy with third.
Too many yellows at Martinsville! But not a record.
Smoke won the race passing Johnson outside. That helped Smoke close in a bit on Carl Edwards in the Chase. Texas is the next race.
Next week the SEMA show starts in Vegas. Lots of cool stuff is coming out this year. Look up Autolyst online, it's really cool.

College Football Wrap Up Oct 23rd
Hey Man!
Case Keenum now has the record for total offense! Your Houston Cougars crushed Marshall 63-28. So much for all that smack the Marshall boys were talking this past week. Houston is 18th in both the AP Top 25 & coaches polls. The Coogs are 17th in the all important BCS standings and 10th in the CBS Sports.com 120.
We saw some other teams ahead of us go down. So if Houston takes care of business and plays smart the perfect season awaits.
Both Bosie and Houston have realistic shots at a perfect season.
Both of us winning out and meeting next year in a new conference?
Mizzu to the SEC after telling everyone they really wanted the BIG10 and then who to the BIG12?
This was also the 70th anniversary of the UH College of Technology, buy a place on the wall. Donations are still being taken. The College of Technology Alumni with the Ft. Bend Alumni club won best tailgate for the 5th time. Great work team, let's do it again next year!
Time for a special thanks to No Label Beer of Katy.
Was that streaker a plant buy UCLA Coach Rick Neuheisel to confuse Arizona players or take the attention off his coaching?

October 16th Motorsports wrap up. On a sad day.
Hey Man,
Where to start.
Well in NASCAR I liked Matt winning the BOA 500 and Carl leading the Chase.
In F1 liked Vettel winning in Korea and Webber helping clinch the constructors championship for Red Bull.
But is is really all about the tragic loss of Dan Weldon.
Today was the last race of the season of IndyCar and it looked to be a good one.
The accident happened early and the race was not restarted. The team members huddled in prayer. The tears streaming down the faces big strong men told you what happened before it was announced.
The drivers decided on a five lap tribute behind the pace car as a final tribute to Dan.
Watching them lap the track slowly reminded me of the missing man formation my father's friends flew over his funeral.
Stay close to your friends and family.
Keep the family and friends of Dan Weldon in your prayers.

College Football Oct 15th wrap
Hey Man,
This will be short and sweet.
There are now only 10 undefeated teams and your Houston cougars are one of them.
Hard to lose on a bye week.
The Coogs are still 25th in the polls going into homecoming week against Marshall.
A&M over Baylor and the BU coach was a little upset after the game.
This long match may be dead long term thanks to UT killing yet another football conference.
OSU beat the Horns making the OU vs. OSU battle to come a bigger deal.
OU defeated KU, But look out for K State.
But the big news is realignment. The leaders of the Big East are finally being proactive. The big news is your Houston Cougars are supposed to be invited to the Big East. New football rivals and old basketball foes for conference mates. UH basketball is already coming back big and this will be tremendous for basketball.
We mostly talk about how being in an AQ conference will help football in recruiting and provide greater income. Given the UH tradition in basketball the Big East may be more profitable for UH than the B12 could be.
The potential invitation to the Big East just adds to homecoming week.

The Cougars are the ONLY Texas team bowl qualified so far.
Your Houston Cougars are:

College Football, NASCAR, F1, and the SCCA
Hey Man,
First a thank you to the Construction Management advisory board and students who came out to cook. It was our turn as the UH Technology Alumni to put on the tailgate. Come join us for any Cougar home game at our pavilion.
UH beat Georgia State in our first shut out since 1999.
It was not as dramatic as our last few games.
We are now 4-0, the best start since 2006 when we won the conference.
All we have to do now is be perfect...
The 12th man Aggies will be the 13th SEC team next July, so Baylor must have gotten some money, and a spiked Dr. Pepper.
UT had a bye this weekend so they could focus on ruining college football for everyone. Their next game at Iowa State should be a bigger blowout than our win over Georgia State.
It takes a lot of work to be an NFL farm club. We as taxpayers need to force a playoff like in basketball. Our state schools are farm clubs for the NFL. But that is another long, long post.
Tony Stewart is 2 for 2 in the NASCAR Chase.
I like Smoke, he is old school.
I got up early to watch the F1 race form Singapore. The championship is all but over now. Jensen Button would have to win all the rest of the races and Vettel would have to not even qualify for Button to win now. However they both drove brilliantly today.
The Runoffs were this weekend at Road America. The SCCA crowned it's national champions in all it's classes today. You should to go to www.scca.com and check it out.

Sept 18th Football News: UH vs LaTech, UT vs UCLA,, ACC SPY vs SPY
Hey Man,
What a game! after looking terrible all game OUR Houston Cougars, pull it out.
Case Keenum took the hits fearlessly and the good guys won. Thanks again to Sergio for hosting a great game watching party.
UT joined UH in helping UCLA start their search for a new coach this weekend with a 49-20 win. McCoy looks great in the games, maybe he stinks in practice.
The Baylor Lawyers are preparing for SFA as I write this.
Pitt and Syracuse have apparently been working behind the scenes for some time to join the ACC and really fooled the rest of The Big East.

Football news BYU vs UT, UH vs UNT. UCF vs BC
Hey man,
UT rallied to win so BYU may still be invited to the BIG12!
IF the BYU Cougars want in the BIG12 they need to remember that the Longhorns hate loosing to Cougars.
I didn't watch that game as I was focused on our Houston Cougars.
After a slow start we won over UNT.
UCF put it on BC. UCF looks good to be in the C-USA championship game.

Now we have to be vigilant for "great" deals on hard to get material. Some submerged equipment should never be reused. Here is a link to the NEMA guidelines for this type situation. NEMA report HERE

Do I want a Loadcenter or a Panelboard? That is the question!!
What is it all about?
A "UL" perspective, for non-hazardous areas.
What dose the spcification call for, what is the AIC, and voltage required?
Is selective cordination required by code?
Then you need a panelboard.
Is this a critical circuit for process control or life safety?
Then you should use a panelboard.
Do you need lighting controls with remote control breakers?
Then you need a panelboard.
Loadcenters Panelboards
What You Need to Know and Look For In Specifications
Certifications—Standards—Acceptance

SEC to A&M, "not on the first date"
Hey Man,
It looks like breaking up is hard to do. TV contracts have to paid off, maybe $30 million?
A&M has to face questions from The TX House Higher Education committee chaired by Dan Branch. A lot of public money is in play here. I don't want to subsidize the Aggie feud with UT. Chairman Branch wrote HB 51, the Tier One Universities bill. He is a grad of Oklahoma Christian, SMU law and is an alumnus of the Institute on Comparative Political & Economic Systems at Georgetown University.
He may ask hard money questions. The Aggies need to have enough guaranteed from the SEC to pay off the TV so the rest of us aren't robbed in this deal. I hope they can pull it off.
Let's see the future holds.....
PAC-16, The BIG(10)-16, The SEC-16, The ACC-16, The BIG EAST-16, and no Big 12.

UH in A&M out of the BIG12?
Hey Man,
There are some interesting stories out and the tide(not The Crimson Tide) is turning the other way.
From Kristi Reiken on Rivals.com
"State Rep. Dan Branch, the chairman of the Texas House Committee on Higher Education, called a hearing before his committee for Tuesday with Big 12, SEC and Texas A&M officials. Texas A&M soon moved up a meeting of the board of regents from Aug. 22 to Monday that includes an agenda item about conference realignment.
He said it would be “inappropriate” for Texas A&M to switch conferences before the hearing.
Also on rivals is a story that Playoff Pac has filed suite against the Fiesta Bowl and state schools who played in it.
Another story on Rivals quotes unnamed SEC sources that the deal is less likely now than Friday. One thing is the 14th school is not a done deal.
I say, the BCS may be busted before we get in.
Go Coogs!

Heat Wave Prep Time
Hey Man,
Right now we need to worry about the heat, not a hurricane. So it's time to review your standby generator. We have unprecedented reliability concerns this Summer in Texas. Several new power plants were cancelled and we are pushing the grid.
First reduce your electric usage with better lighting, windows, and insulation.
Now consider a stand by generator to protect you and your loved ones from the heat.
Natural gas will still be on at your home if the electricity fails in most cases.
Now that I have a completely new A/C system I am considering a fixed stand by generator for my home.
cheers

Hurricane Season prep time
Hi
The experts again predict a busy season to justify their jobs.
What can you do to overcome a power outage at home?
Here are a few tips:
Pray .
Make up with friends and family, you may need to visit them for a while.
Consider installing a standby generator or get a multi-fuel carb for your portable generator. Gasoline, residential natural gas, and propane can all power your generator. Residential natural gas is the last utility you will loose in a hurricane or other emergency.
I plan on ordering such a carb after I publish this.
Get a damp location portable window fan to run off your generator.
For A/C keep that window unit, add a split system, or portable so your generator can carry it. That will allow your generator to keep part of your house cool.
That helped me a lot the last time.
If you are going to get a mini refrigerator for the garage or game room, get one that will fit under your desk at work, again that helped me last time.
Have a battery holiday to start hurricane season, and change all of your batteries out.
Look at the charge times for rechargeable batteries, your may be able to recharge at work.
Some rechargeable batteries take too long to recharge to be helpful. I recharged my DeWalt 36v batteries at work last time. That powered my primary flashlight.
Get an inverter for your auto, then you can recharge batteries on the road.
Solar chargers for camping can keep your radios working. Siemens offers a scalable home solar package now that could keep part of your home up if the storm dosen’t carry it away.
Now I better buy that carb and some batteries.
Cheers,

HAZ location bascis IEC vs NEC/CEC
Hey Man,
Today just a quick reminder for you. The IEC T ratings are like our NEC/CEC system. They have T3, we have T3, T3A, T3B, & T3C. However their gas groups are inverted. The IEC group A is our group D.
The comparison below is helpful

O.T.C. 2011
Hi,
Today was the second day of the Offshore Technology Conference and my first chance this year to attend.
A 7a.m. client emergency sent me to my office first as I prepared to go to OTC. Once I arrived at OTC I was greeted by the longest line I have seen in years and it was 10a.m.
I have not gotten any official attendance figures, but everyone I spoke to said it was busy and was upbeat. Talking about orders still outpaces firm orders, but smaller orders are really up. Some really big work seems to be breaking overseas. Sadly we now have more oppressive and capricious regulation here than overseas. Oil being too high was a concern quietly expressed around the show.
I was able to visit most of my clients and vendors at the show today. There were some neat new products as always. Frank Ivester of Killark and Pat Werling of Pauluhn were among those with innovations to show.

Another great event in the books!
Today we had the 15th UH College of Technology Alumni Golf Tournament.
We returned to Wood forest golf club and again they treated us great.
Thanks to all our sponsors large and small.
It was great & if you didn't make it this year come out next year.
We had a near record turnout and raised a good bit of money for scholarships.
As always at our tournament there were prizes for almost everyone.
The weather was fantastic. I have never seen so many butterflies at a golf course.
One one hole an eagle slowly glided around our carts looking at the gold balls on the green.
The eagle was two feet above the green.
I led my team to second place and we had a great time.
cheers

Shrimp boil wrap up
There was a great turn out at the ISA Pipeline shrimp boil this year. Lots of tickets were sold helping the scholarship fund. The people that put this event on did a great job. We had fun at our booth talking to old friends and meeting new people. The interest in the VFD and critical circuit panel board we showed was gratifying. Thanks to John Blue from EES for coming out to help man the booth.

Travel tip.(fashion)
Hi,
If you are flying consider this. Buy the TDU belt from 5.11, it has a plastic buckle.
It looks like a regular belt. It will not set off metal detectors and it still holds up your pants!
It is available at dealers across the country and on line. It cost about $15.00, mine was less in Houston.
The slip type buckle is small and you don't really see it.
It made my trip through the scanners faster this week.
I don't like taking my belt off in the airport.

It's good to be back home
Hi,
just got back from our second HD Supply Electrical national sales meeting.
We spent the entire time in the Orlando Airport Hyatt. Perhaps next year they can include a trip our our new HQ in downtown Orlando across the street from the new stadium. We were in the meetings from 4:30 pm Sunday until we left today on the 5:55pm flight.
We got to hang out with some old friends and picked up some new ideas that could help you.
But there sure is a lot of catching up to do. I'll be in the office early tomorrow.

New legislation
From the the Senator's web site
Today, U.S. Senator Jim DeMint (R-South Carolina) joined with U.S. Senator Mike Enzi (R-Wyoming) to introduce the Better Use of Light Bulbs (BULB) Act. The legislation would repeal light bulb standards Congress included in the 2007 energy law that effectively bans traditional incandescent light bulbs starting in 2012. The ban was intended to save on electricity costs and limit pollution by replacing traditional incandescent light bulbs with energy-efficient compact florescent light bulbs (CFLs). However, CFLs are more expensive, many contain mercury which can be harmful even in the smallest amounts, and most are manufactured overseas in places like China. In September 2010, the last major GE manufacturing plant for incandescent light bulbs in the U.S. closed in Winchester, Virginia and 200 jobs were lost.
“I think it’s fine if someone wants to fill their home or business with the light from the new bulbs. I also think it is fine if someone wants to buy an old-fashioned bulb because it works better for them. If left alone, the best bulb will win its rightful standing in the marketplace. Government doesn’t need to be in the business of telling people what light bulb they have to use,” said Senator Enzi, who authored the BULB Act.
“Washington needs to stop picking winners and losers in the marketplace and micromanaging how Americans live their lives,” said Senator DeMint, the lead co-sponsor of the bill. “Americans are fully capable of choosing the best way to light their own homes and what best fits the needs and budget of their families. When Congress dictates which light bulbs folks in South Carolina must buy, it’s clear the ‘nanny state’ mentality has gotten out of control in Washington.”
The BULB Act has 27 co-sponsors. A companion version of the legislation has been introduced by Congressman Joe Barton, R-Texas, in the House of Representatives.
The Heritage Foundation recently reported on CFLs, stating: “[T]he exposure to mercury vapor is dangerous if the bulbs are broken. Hospitals and medical charities warn that CFL bulbs cause migraines and epilepsy attacks. Other critics also point out that CFLs do not work well in colder temperatures and thus will force Americans to use more heat. CFLs do not work well with dimmer switches, and the lifespan of the bulb diminishes when turned off and on frequently.”
